Usdaw highlights the change the union campaigned for and Labour is delivering for working mums

Since the general election, Labour has:

  • Agreed a new right to neonatal care leave and pay.
  • Proposed new employment rights to help make work pay and be more secure.
  • Launched a review of Universal Credit to help tackle child poverty.
  • Started the roll-out of free breakfast clubs in schools.

Paddy Lillis - Usdaw General Secretary says: “Usdaw represents hundreds of thousands of working parents and today, we are rightly celebrating the role that mums play in the home, community, workplace and wider society. Times have been tough and many working families have struggled to make ends meet in the Tories’ cost of living crisis.

“Last July, we voted for change and for the chance to secure a government that listens to our members and delivers on their issues and concerns. In less than a year, Labour has made a great start by introducing a whole range of rights to help working parents, with the promise of much more to come.

“While we celebrate our achievements, we continue to campaign for further improvements. So, we very much welcome that the Government is reviewing Universal Credit, to help make work pay and tackle child poverty. It is our sincere hope that this will lead to substantial changes, to help ensure that the lowest-paid workers get the security they need. This will play a substantial role in ensuring fewer children grow up in poverty, despite being in a working household.”
