Addressing delegates in Liverpool, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “We’ll get our skills system right. We’ve got to give businesses more flexibility to adapt to real training needs. So, we will introduce new foundation apprenticeships, rebalance funding in our training system back to young people, align that with what businesses really need.”

Responding to the speech, Paddy Lillis – Usdaw general secretary says: “Keir Starmer hit the right note today, setting out a positive agenda of change for the government and nothing illustrates that more than the bold plan for a revolution in training. Something Usdaw has long campaigned for as we face ever increasing use of artificial intelligence, automation and new technology in our workplaces.

“Fundamental reform of the Apprenticeship Levy scheme is essential. It has failed to deliver the essential training workers need. It needs to be accessible to all workers, with a focus on opportunities for those facing disadvantages in the labour market. Usdaw is also looking for significant and long-term investment in skills funding to give workers the vocational skills needed for the future of work. We also need a voice for workers in all discussions on skills strategy.

“The Prime Minister set out how change has already begun after years of Tory stagnation and there is much more to come with a huge programme of legislation already announced that will improve workers' rights, tackle retail crime and breathe new life into our high streets. There is light at the end of the tunnel, we know it will be a tough journey, but we are confident Labour will deliver on members’ priorities.”
