Checkout Learning is aimed at retail staff in particular.
The campaign works with local colleges to provide suitable learning at local venues – sometimes even in-store. But it’s not just about learning; it helps to build membership and Union organisation. Developing Usdaw Union Learning Reps (ULRs) helps raise the profile of the Union in a very positive way.
Checkout Learning started in 2007 and was an immediate success. In the first year, the campaign visited over 60 stores, brought over 500+ members back into learning and recruited over 400 new members. That’s around seven per store. It’s clear that learning is a key issue in retail and is yet another good reason to join Usdaw.
