Become a rep
Usdaw representatives are among the best trained individuals within the trade union movement.
Any Usdaw member can volunteer for this role, which offers opportunities to develop a diverse skill set. These skills include case preparation, member representation, improved communication with both colleagues and management, campaign planning, and effective meeting management.
Rep responsibilities include:
- Recruiting new members to the union.
- Playing a crucial role in representing members during discussions with management, such as in disciplinary hearings or when addressing grievances.
- Usdaw Reps may be called upon to handle health and safety concerns or provide guidance on various workplace issues, including time off, holidays, pay, changes to working hours, and company policies.
- Through their role, reps gain extensive knowledge of workers' rights, employment law, health and safety regulations, pension schemes, contract details, and disciplinary and grievance procedures.
Our Reps have the option to engage in broader union activities, such as attending weekend schools, regional gatherings, and conferences. They can also participate in national conferences, directly influencing the union's policies and priorities. The extent of involvement is entirely voluntary, allowing each rep to determine their level of engagement based on personal preference and availability.
