Extreme temperatures, both very hot and very cold, are a familiar problem for workers. While there is a legally enforceable minimum workplace temperature, there is not a corresponding maximum enforceable temperature.

Offensive Weapons Bill is welcomed - Usdaw calls for greater protection for shopworkers

Shopworkers’ trade union leader John Hannett has welcomed the Offensive Weapons Bill, which is due for its second reading in the House of Commons tomorrow. Usdaw is calling on the Government to provide greater protection for shopworkers who will enforce the new law at the point of sale.

An Usdaw backed Scottish Parliament Bill to protect workers progresses to the next stage

Daniel Johnson MSP (Edinburgh Southern) is aiming to provide additional protections for retail and bar staff, including those who sell age-restricted items.
His member’s bill has now received the necessary cross-party support and will move to the drafting stage.

Usdaw's 'Justice for Injured Workers' campaign is backed by a select committee report

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw has welcomed today’s Justice Select Committee report on a Ministry of Justice proposal to raise the limit for personal injury claims dealt with in a small claims court from £1,000 to £5,000 for RTA cases and to £2000 for workplace and other non RTA injuries.

Shoplifting in England and Wales continues to rise according to police recorded crimes – Usdaw calls for action

Shopworkers’ trade union leader John Hannett has called for Government action in light of the Office for National Statistics today reporting an 8% increase in police recorded incidents of shoplifting during 2017, continuing the trend of a 31% increase over the last decade.

Scottish Protection of Workers Bill gets strong support from the retail union Usdaw

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw has responded to a consultation on a Protection of Workers Bill, which is being promoted in the Scottish parliament by Daniel Johnson MSP (Labour, Edinburgh Southern). The union fully supports the creation of a new offence of assault against a worker in the retail sector.

Usdaw calls for support for a new law protecting Scottish shopworkers from violence

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw and businesses are supporting a new law to protect workers. Labour MSP Daniel Johnson is promoting a Bill that would create new offences regarding the assault of shopworkers and others, like bar and pub staff, who are involved in the sale and supply of age-restricted good and services. The consultation period on the Bill closes this Friday 20 April.
