Shopworkers’ trade union leader John Hannett has called for action after yet more evidence of retail crime on the increase. The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) today reports nearly a million thefts from UK convenience stores in 2017, which is a 65% increase on the previous year.

Five years on and Usdaw stats show that Government reforms to CICS denied compensation for nearly half of workers injured by a criminal

Government reforms to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (CICS) took effect in November 2012 and stats released by Usdaw today show that applications for compensation by the union on behalf of members injured by a criminal have almost halved, down by 47.4%.

Usdaw concerned that shoplifting continues to rise according to police recorded crimes in England and Wales

Shopworkers’ trade union leader John Hannett has questioned whether police cuts are having an effect on crime as the Office for National Statistics today details a 10% increase in police recorded incidents of shoplifting during the year to September 2017, continuing the trend of a 30% increase over the last decade.

Protection of Workers Bill launched by Daniel Johnson MSP with support of Usdaw and retailers

Labour MSP Daniel Johnson has today launched his proposal for a new law to protect workers. Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw and businesses are supporting the change, with the consultation launched today at a Scotmid store in Edinburgh.

TUC condemns plans to ditch working time protection
19 December 2017
The TUC has spoken out against proposals from Ministers to scrap the Working Time Directive in post-Brexit Britain. Repealing the Working Time Regulations would remove rights to paid holidays, daily and weekly rest breaks, restrictions on maximum weekly hours and health protection for night workers. At least 7 million workers would lose out according to the TUC.
