Extreme temperatures, both very hot and very cold, are a familiar problem for many workers. While there is a legally enforceable minimum workplace temperature, there is not a corresponding maximum enforceable temperature. Usdaw has welcomed a commitment from the Labour Party to modernise health and safety guidance on extreme temperatures to ensure safety at work. Keir Starmer’s pro-business, pro-worker manifesto will deliver the changes that Usdaw members desperately need 13 June 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw has welcomed the launch of Labour’s manifesto, a fully costed and fully funded programme to bring back economic growth and deliver prosperity. Usdaw is particularly pleased that the Party has made significant commitments on issues that the union has long called for in its ‘New Deal’, ‘Freedom from Fear’ and ‘Save our Shops’ campaigns: 20% increase in shoplifting across Northern Ireland – Usdaw calls for a protection of shop workers’ law 06 June 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw is deeply concerned by today’s recorded crime statistics from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) showing a 19.6% uplift in shoplifting, in the year to the end of April, at a time when most other victim-based crimes are in decline. Usdaw is seeking Stormont support for a Scottish-style protection of shop workers’ law. Only Labour has a plan to tackle retail crime after years of Tory failure to address rising shoplifting and abuse of shop workers says Usdaw 29 May 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw is backing Labour’s plan to tackle shop crime after years of Tory opposition to tougher punishments for those who assault staff and then a broken promise after they finally U-turned on the need to legislate. Tories played political games with shop worker safety says Usdaw after the Criminal Justice Bill is dropped 28 May 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw has criticised Tory ministers for failing to follow through on their promise to create a standalone offence of assaulting a shop worker. The Government did table an amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill, which was weaker than the law that already exists in Scotland, but it fell when a general election was called and didn’t get through Parliament’s so-call wash-up. 20% increase in shoplifting across Northern Ireland – Usdaw calls for a protection of shopworkers law 21 May 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw is deeply concerned by recorded crime statistics from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) showing a 20% uplift in shoplifting in the last twelve months. This continues the trend of increases since the pandemic and shoplifting has now risen to the highest level recorded this millennium. Labour amendments to the Criminal Justice Bill welcomed by Usdaw, Government is urged to support them 09 May 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw has welcomed two amendments to the Government’s Criminal Justice Bill that have been tabled by shadow policing minister Alex Norris MP (Labour/Co-op Nottingham North). The draft legislation is due to begin its remaining stages in the House of Commons on Wednesday 15 May 2024, when these amendments could be debated and voted on by all MPs. #ShopKind Week: Usdaw joins the call for respect for shopworkers struggling in a retail crime epidemic 07 May 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw has welcomed today’s launch of the national #ShopKind Week, which encourages shoppers to treat staff with respect. UK-wide polling highlights that 31% of customers are more anxious when they shop and 36% have witnessed violence and abuse towards shopworkers while shopping. ADM 2024: Usdaw delegates highlight the impact of PTSD on assaulted shopworkers 28 April 2024 Delegates at the Usdaw Annual Delegate Meeting in Blackpool have today highlighted the impact of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on workers, not least shopworkers who are victims of violence, threats and abuse.
